Legal Marriage

For a significant part of the world, legal marriage in Bali is a viable option and recognized by certain foreign countries. To proceed with a legal wedding ceremony, the couple must participate in an initial religious ceremony based on their recognized religion by the Government of Indonesia, which includes Christian Protestant, Catholic, Buddhism, Hindu, and Muslim faiths. The marriage is required to be officially registered with the district Civil Registrar, and the ceremony must adhere to religious rites.

In adherence to Indonesian regulations, all foreign individuals intending to marry in Indonesia must obtain a "CNI" (Certificate of Non-Impediment to Marriage) before the wedding. This document is essentially a letter from the consulate or embassy representative in Indonesia, affirming there is no objection to the marriage.

To obtain this letter, couples are typically required to personally visit their respective consulate, taking an oath to confirm their eligibility for marriage. Some embassies or consulate offices may allow the application for CNI by submitting all necessary details remotely. For more details, please reach out to our wedding specialist. Below is a list of documents needed for processing your marriage certificate in Indonesia:

  • Passport

  • Birth certificates for both parties

  • Details of religious faith (e.g., baptism certificates)

  • Written parental consent for anyone under the age of 21

  • Death certificate of a former spouse (if applicable)

  • Decree absolute divorce certificate (if applicable)

  • Two witnesses are required for the wedding. If you do not have any witnesses, we can arrange them.

  • Eight photographs (6 x 4 cm) of the couple in the same photo. The photos must capture the head and shoulders only, side by side, looking straight ahead. These photos will be affixed to your wedding certificate.
